Aegean to Corfu October 2011
Dodging the delta
October 21, 2011
The mainland coast between Igoumenitsa and Sagiada is a series of river deltas that protrude a long way out into the Corfu Channel, and continue under the water for a good way off shore.
Take the direct route from Lakka to Sagiada, or hug the coast coming up from Sivota or Plataria to Sagiada and you will probably run aground…
As we make our way north, or rather just a bit west of north to keep out of the shallows we passed the port of Igoumenitsa but there is something strange… Where are all the ferries? Normally the Corfu channel is awash with them running between Igoumenitsa and Corfu Town or Levkimmi with little local ones popping into Plataria etc.
Today the sea is empty except for a few yachts and one cruise liner. What it going on, is Greece in the grip of yet another General Strike?
Also there don’t seem to be any aircraft coming into or out of Corfu airport if there is a strike going on when will it end? Will we be able to fly out on Sunday?
