Just a Dream

what is the dream?

September 14, 2010

Until 2005 , when I took a ASA certified coastal cruising course, my idea of a sailboat was a 25 foot, open cockpit, no below decks, tiller operated thing. At Community Boating in Boston,MA we sailed a boat they called a Cape Cod. It was great for river basin sailing and limited harbor sailing.

At Boston Harbor sailing school I sailed boats up to a pearson31, it was then I realized that these were RVs on the water and I wanted one. So I began all the reading. Anyone want back issues of BW saiing, Cruising World magazines I have five years worth. I joined BHSC for a year to continue sailing. Unfortunately a few years ago my mom developed Alzheimer’s, suffice to say its a terrible disease, so I have been her primary care giver for the last three years. In February I had to quit my job so I could go 24/7 taking care of her.

With limited free time I could only devote it to my first passion Long distance hiking. I have backpacked approximateley 4000 miles in the last ten years, including the Appalachian Trail, The Colorado Trail, The Long trail(VT), and a great week at Glacier National Park Montana, I figure Long Distance sailing is not much different, except you have a boat not a tent, and you can carry more than 40 pounds of junk.

The dream, at this time(may change), is to get a older 30 foot cruising boat and begin to experience the life, build my skills and see if this what i really want. Next January I begin the search and hope to have something in the water by spring. BHSC has six month moorings, may to October at reasonable price. I will play with this for a few years and if I like it as much as know I will and the seasickness is limited, im in.

My drean boat is a Performance cruising Gemini 105 Mc 34, catamaran. Somewhere in the next few years i will go to The Boat show at Annapolis and get a very good look at the new ones. online I am following several Gemini blogs as well as youtube videos. The Catamaran Company has some good promo vids of new Geminis as well as for sale videos of older models. This boat is capable of circumnavigating the world.

Not that, that is what I want to do, well with the right woman, maybe. I will be happy with east coast/ bahamas/ carribean crusing for a few years at least. definetley a few Bermuda runs, it is so close from Cape Cod. Hey if your in bermuda its only a few more days to the Azores, then the Med is not to far…..get it, good.
