Heading South!

November 07, 2009

Hello again. Just another magnificent day on the bounding main, full sun, bright blue ocean, 20 knots of breeze veering (trending east) just as we wanted, and . . . drum roll please . . . Cap’n Rogas now owns the Hylas 49 surfing record, with a peak speed of 13.2 knots down the face of one of our endless 10-12 foot long period rollers. Otto the Autopilot is contestng the reccord since he was driving at the time, but Jim contends that since he told Otto where to go (and can do so again if Otto doesn’t behave), and I think we have to give the Skipper the record — unless somebody can get a higer peak.

With the new more easterly wind, we’re moving South towards the Islands now. See you there Dianna and Barb!

That’s all for this AM, maybe a bit more later on . . .

Mike:

The Carib1500 tracker shows you all at 21.03 N and 64.73 W this morning so you all are getting close. You all appear to have run a track further North than most of the cruising fleet.

Suggest when you get to Tortola, take a shower, pick up the wives/significant others and have dinner at Davide Pugliese’s Brandywine Bay – just North of Road Town.

Hoping you will be able to visit a few of the islands before you have to come back. Definitely want to hit Gorda Sound – suggest you dock or pick up a mooring at Levrick Bay. Nick runs the water-side operation there and he can fix you up with whatever you need. Take a look around while you are there. The wives/significant others may never want to leave. Richard Branson owns two islands there – Mosquito Island which is just North of Leverick Bay, and Necker Island which is outside the sound on the way North towards Anegada.

If you have a couple of days, head North to Anegada. DON’T TRUSTYOURGPSMAPS if you go. Best navigational advice is from Walker Mangum at www.bvipirate.com. Two beautiful (primitive) beaches there – Loblolly Bay and Cow Wreck. If you go to Cow Wreck say hello to Bell (she and her husband Wendell own/run the place), also Alex Warren (school teacher, basketball coach, and musician), his friend Taylor, and, if you see a Texas flag flying over a cottage there, say hello to Walker and Nancy Mangum. For dinner, either Potter’s or Neptune’s Treasure. At Potter’s you will likely be served by Vishaal – he’ll take good care of you. If you go to Neptune’s (that’s where we stayed this summer) it will probably be Randy taking care of you.

If you still have time, I’d try and go to White Bay on Jost Van Dyke – it’s would be a nice broad reach or even a run from Anegada. Pretty beach – might be crowded this time of year.

Anyway, have fun!
