Down into the Inland Sea
May 11, 2006
Motor through the Levkas Canal and then its sails out again as we emerge into the inland sea with Arillas and the lead boat coming up astern.
I put in a slight alteration to starboard to slip through the channel between Skorpios (The Onassis Island) and Skorpithi.
More VHF traffic, “Misios please leave Skorpios to Starboard”..
I give them a quiet little reminder about “Not teaching grandmothers to suck eggs” only in a more polite form pointing out that I do know where I am going and I know where the Hermoniti Shoal is, and we will see them in Vathi ( I don’t actually tell them that I had on one occaision got close enough to the Hermoniti to actually see it, that might make them more worried!)
Anyway its a simple fly-by past Skorpios, pointing out the mooring buoy for the Christina (the Canadian frigate that Onassis had converted into one of the first real super-yachts) and then head straight overtowards Sparchahori to avoid the shoal, and back up the coast of Meghanissi to get into the inlet for Vathi.
Here we are going into George’s Taverna which is tucked in on the right hand side as you enter the inlet. It is well placed to avoid the swells that can plague the main quay and has its own little quay with “Lazy lines” to make things easy for you.
