Enjoying Turkey

September 28, 2012

After a couple of pleasant mights anchored outside of Bozburun we sailed slowly around to Dirsek bay, one of our favourite spots.

Not a ripple in the bay, water temperature back up to 30 deg, 35 C in the cabin, and the Tuna still tastes good cooked on the BBQ. Mykonos is a distant memory !

Back in Turkey and Blue Card

September 25, 2012

We sailed from Leros via Pserimos and onto Kos, staying in the old town harbour for two nights. The procedure to check out of Greece was very straight forward and surprisingly free!
Sunday morning we headed back to Turkey, stopping off at Ova Buku (Oguns place) before heading on to Bozburun to spend a few nights and check in to Turkey.
When we checked out from Bozburun 5 weeks ago we were issued (for 10 Euro fee) a Blue Card- the device devised to monitor waste disposal from the boat. The agent presented us with a receipt to prove 100 litres had been pumped out despite the fact that Bozburun doesn’t have any pump- out facility!! On checking in, apparently you have to be pumped out again so we were duly charged 5 Euro for another bit of paper to present to any inquiring coast guard (who do not have the facility to read the electronic card) documenting another 100 litre pump out. The agent assures us that Bozburun will have a pump out facility next year.

The American Hitch

September 20, 2012

On what was to turn out to be quite an eventful day, we started out with a gentle sail/ motor over from Levitha to pick up a buoy in Xirokambos, a bay on the south of Leros, with a fine view of Kalymnos to the south.

We dingied ashore to the Taverna associated with the buoy with another few kgs of tuna which the Aloni Taverna cooked very nicely for us (only a few more kgs left!). Feeling quite replete, we returned to the boat for an ouzo and a bit of Leonard Cohen before bed.
The ouzo and LC were just having their usual effect when I was disturbed by shouts from Dean, who having just gone on deck to look at the stars, noticed a dinghy floating off behind the boat-and while holding the dinghy painter in his hands had astutely realised it might be ours. Indeed it was, and being blown at a fair rate towards Kalymnos.
Too late to swim for it, the only option was to call for assistance from the boat on the buoy next door. Fortunately I was able to wake up Ed from Ann-Sofi, who came gallantly to our rescue, taking me out in his dinghy with a torchlight to hunt down the escaping craft.
The morning after I was up early giving Dean a revision of the knot lesson (bowline) we had done the previous morning . Dean claims to have attached the painter to the dinghy with two half hitches-note, no round turns seemed to have been involved. I have christened the knot the American Hitch, and strongly recommend not to use it to attach painters to dinghies( no wonder those cowboys were always losing their horses)!

Screaming reels city

September 19, 2012

Honestly, it’s like waiting for a bus- only days after the first big catch if the season(Swordfish) Dean and I, with assistance from Tamzin and Firstmate Sue reel in this whopping Tuna

We managed to escape Mykonos yesterday, just before it rained, heading East to a small bay on the north of Danousa. After a relatively quiet night, we made another 30 miles East today to the small island of Levitha, only stopping halfway briefly to pull dinner aboard!

Mykonos- the land of wind

September 16, 2012

Left the new marina at Ermoupolis early to tie up on the town dock, get water and look around the impressive town. Then sailed over in a gentle breeze to Rinia, just off Mykonos for a lunch stop. About 2 minutes after dropping the anchor 15 kts of wind got up from the north, which by the time we headed over to Mykonos had strengthened to 30 kts – a bit more than the 6 kts from the SE forecast. Fortunately our spot in Ornos Bay was free so we are back anchored in familiar territory – just as well as the wind got up to 25 again last night.

Crew change today-Fond farewell to Nick, Cinzia, Paul & Rosie and welcome aboard to Dean and Tamzin who will sail with us to put Hilda to bed in Orhaniye in 2 weeks time.
First step is planning escape from Mykonos!

Naousa, Paros

September 14, 2012

First mate Sue and Cinzia, enjoying a moment of calm.

Not enough wind for sailing yesterday so just motored over to anchor around the corner from Naousa on the north of the lovely island of Paros. Lovely anchorage, calm night, a little southerly breeze today to blow us up to Syros later, a great Fredo Cappochino with doughnuts in town- bliss!

Goodbye Mykonos(at last!)

September 12, 2012

After nearly three weeks in Ornos Bay, Mykonos the wind finally abated (only 20 knots) so we took the chance to sail south to Naxos, with Nick, Cinzia, Paul and Rosie aboard. Got the last spot in the harbour in Naxos, plugged into electricity and water so are happy campers.
Southerly winds forecast for next few days so plan to visit Paros and Syros before returning to Mykonos on Saturday.

Sunset in Mykonos Town.

At rest in Mykonos

September 04, 2012

Yes, after 11 days we’re still in the same spot on Mykonos. The wind hasn’t dropped much below 25 kts, but the boat is in a great safe spot so we’ve been enjoying Mykonos by land.

We are actually slightly closer to Agios Iannis beach than Ornos, and it’s about 15 mins walk down to Hippie Fish, the cafe made famous in Shirley Valentine- the beach here is much nicer and less crowded than Ornos.

Nancy & Henry departed last Saturday and my sister Tricia and husband Paul are now with us enjoying the delights of Mykonos which is really growing on us.
We went into town Sunday to see The Artist at the open air cinema- great fun.

And we’ve discovered the Caramelo pastry shop in Ornos that makes the best Baclava in the world.
I’ve given up looking at the weather forecast- glad we aren’t on a schedule to be anywhere else in a hurry!

Calm today, but 30 knts forecast for rest of week so plan to hunker down in this sheltered spot and explore Mykonos by land.
