Early today we motored over a flat calm sea to Kihei, 8.5 miles north of Makena. We dropped the hook off of sugar beach in a sandy bottom. We stayed three days and walked on the beach, took advantage of a small farmers market for produce, road the bus into town to replenish some of our provisions, watched the outrigger canoes from the local canoe club and generally enjoyed the place. But, the downside was the high winds funneling through the isthmus, bringing with it dirt and ash from fires in the sugar cane fields. After three days, SD was turning brown, so we decided it was time to move on.
