After a number of years of being on the east coast I'm now taking my little boat from Cramond in Edinburgh through the Forth and Clyde canal to Bowling and then onwards to Tarbert.
May 01, 2009: After what seems like ages we set out today to take the Timahoy up to the first lock of the Forth and Clyde canal. Its called Carron lock and is just beyond Grangemouth and up the river Carron for two miles. With my new engine and the helpStephen my son and Ron from the ‘Impulse’ at Cramond I got on to the Timahoy. The new engine looked like not starting and we huffed and puffed... » read more1 posts (329 words) 0 photos 0 comments
This year we're attempting to sail around the UK - going anti-clockwise in the hope of less passages with the wind on the nose and a lot more sailing.

Cruise from Findochty down the caledonian canal and back
May 01, 2009: The July Cruise of DestinoI got off to a false start. The Saturday weather was not good for the canal, so I went home again. Sunday night found me bedding down on Destino for an early start. At 03.30 Monday I left Findochty towards Inverness. It was a glorious dawn, with a light S.E. wind that I managed to use un-aided as far as Lossiemouth. From Lossiemouth onwards I motorsailed, entering Clac... » read more1 posts (505 words) 3 photos 0 comments

October 19, 2010: Lymington to Gosport on a bank holiday Monday, just like a normal weekend. There are more boats out here than we’ve seen in the entire trip, I had forgotten what a crowded bit of water this is.Vessel on the bow, on port tack, vessel on the starboard bow closing on starboard, go behind her, and then watch out for the other one…Liz and Chris have phoned their family to be down on Gillk... » read more18 posts (4276 words) 126 photos 0 comments
Preparations to go cruising
June 15, 2011: After our first little trip I found a few things that did not work or needed some maintenance. The main thing was the autopilot. Although the delivery crew, who sailed the boat from England to Scotland, said the autopilot worked fine, I found it did not work when we took the boat out for a day sail. No big deal for a few hours, but of course I need this vital piece of equipment to work for... » read more5 posts (1375 words) 1 photos 0 comments
Beaumaris, Anglesey to Inner and possibly Outer Hebrides (depending on weather!) from July 12th to August 30th 2009. Sailing Soay, 32ft Sadler with John, Jan and Oscar.
September 28, 2009: Thursday 27th August. PSM, IoM to Beaumaris. 63 miles. 11.5 hoursIt is quite comforting to sail with another yacht at night and keep in regular contact. Sea Lark has no radar. Their radar reflector was in the car. I was surprised by the volume of “traffic” off IoM given that some day-time crossings you seem to see nothing at all. Jan kept Se... » read more40 posts (5249 words) 16 photos 0 comments

September 28, 2009: Wednesday 12th August Rothesay, Isle of Bute to Lamlash Harbour, Isle of ArranLucky Dad paid for Mum to go on the Radar Course – we needed it! For a change Mum was desperate to leave our pontoon. She was up and at them early, tea in bed for Dad and an early morning walk for me. We left in low cloud/fog.
