Zum Mittelmeer, das zu den ozeanischen Nebenmeeren gezählt wird, gehören auch zahlreiche Inselgruppen und einzelne größere und kleinere Inseln. Die flächenmäßig größte Insel des Mittelmeers ist Sizilien, gefolgt von Sardinien, welche wie Sizilien eine Region von Italien bildet. Weitere flächenmäßig große Mittelmeerinseln sind Korsika, Kreta und Zypern. Zypern und Malta mit seinen Nachbarinseln bilden die beiden einzigen Inselstaaten des Mittelmeeres. Sizilien ist mit mehr als 5 Millionen Einwohnern mit Abstand die bevölkerungsreichste Mittelmeerinsel.
