After a number of years of being on the east coast I'm now taking my little boat from Cramond in Edinburgh through the Forth and Clyde canal to Bowling and then onwards to Tarbert.

Port Bannatyne is a sleepy stone and slate pre-Victorian village in the northeast of the Isle of Bute, built around Kames Bay, a particularly well protected mooring. Sleeping on-board it was an absolute treat to wake up, look outside and see such outstanding scenery.
The marina owners are a highland family who treated us with great kindness making our stay very pleasant indeed. The village itself has a very unusual golf course (with deer grazing about,) two pubs, a Post Office/shop/tearoom, and a small hotel with a Russian restaurant (again pretty unusual.) This restauirant served the local crayfish on large platters with freshly baked hot bread for £11!
Port Bannatyne is in great contrast to Rothesay just down water 3 miles where the ferries make approach difficult, and the late night youths disturb a decent night’s sleep, even pelt the boats with beer cans!
