Corfu and Paxos, May 2008
Across to the Mainland
May 16, 2008
Leaving Paxos behind us we slip over to the village of Sivota on the mainland, opposite the southern end of Corfu. This village is sometimes refered to as Mourtos or Sivota North to avoid confusion with the village of Sivota down on Lefkada.
Approaching from the south you can either go up the Corfu Channel until past Sivota Island and then turn in towards the harbour, or cut through between the island and the mainland.
Be aware that this channel is shallow and you have to stay in the centre, and there is ridge of rock that joins the island to the mainland about two thirds of the way along it. This ridge comes up to just over two metres of depth and newcomers to the area may get a few heart murmers as the bottom seems to come rushing up to meet you.
I have taken a Beneteau 361 and a Bavaria 42 through here in the past (but she was the shallow draft version), so a little Jaguar wouldn’t have posed any problem.
As it was on this trip, however, we found some good wind and sailed around the longer route.
I can seriously recommend the bakery here, its a bit of a walk to get to but their bread hot from the oven and tipped straight into a carrier bag at 08:45 was still warm when we had it for lunch hours later.
