Corfu and Paxos, May 2008
Another short hop
May 14, 2008
This is really a positioning cruise to get the Jaguar flotilla to its northern operating base of Plataria, so we really dont have very far to go in fourteen days, and in fact are already south of our final destination.
It is therefore a case of hopping from one bay to the next to show the crews different places in the area, but the keener sailors of course don’t have to go direct from port to port.
Today’s destination is Mongonissi, the most southerly "harbour" / anchorage on Paxos and just one and a half miles south of Gaios.
Mongonissi is a one taverna port with a short quay that will take a couple of dozen boats at a pinch, bit you can also anchor off in the circular bay if you want to.
It is actually not so much a bay as a channel between Mongonissi Island and Paxos proper, but the southern end of the channel is very shallow and rocky and makes it a bay in all but reality.
Thira popped out of Gaios and anchored in Mongonissi for lunch before going out for an afternoon sail around. We went down to Emerald Bay on Anti Paxos and found that most of the flotilla had gone directly there from Gaios before heading back to Mongonissi.
The weather this trip leaves a lot to be desired and Emerald Bay wasn’t looking its best, you really need a blue sky to sea the colour that the water takes on with the crystal clear water over the white sand bottom.
