Down to Paxos

May 12, 2008

North East until clear of the shallows and then SSE towards Paxos,

A good days sailing today, if a little slow at times, enlivened by watching the hydrofoil ferries racing past.

Approaching the north entrance to Gaios we saw the local airline arrive, a twin-otter sea plane coming in at a steep angle and going into the ferry port, and then thirty minutes later as we came nearer to the entrance it emerged again.

A roar of engines and its up up and away over us.

Sea breeze has finally kicked in and it lovely sailing weather so let stay out for a bit longer.

"Thira, Thira, what is your eta today", oops sounds like the lead crew want to call it a day and head for a beer, so we will head in and moor off the town quay.

Approaching the North entrance we hear aircraft engines again and there is the twin otter again high on our starboard quarter and then its diving steeply in towards us.  Pull up! All under control, as she lands just off the harbour entrance and disappears behind the ferry berth before she starts to even slow down. Oh well I presume the pilot could see there was no traffic coming out.

We motor down past a lot of Jaguars, most of the group seem to have gone for the quieter North Quay, round the corner and there is the village and town quay in front of us.  Prepare to moor bows in.

Three dragging anchors later, and we give up and go back to the north quay. I have parked on the town key before but stern to with larger boats and bigger anchors so perhaps our little Danforth kedge wasn’t heavy enough to dig itself in.
