Barbeque Time

October 09, 2006

Back to Union Island again today, but this time past Clifton and round into Chatham Bay for a barbeque.

Chatham is a lovely spot, clear water and a long sand beach but with rocky headlands at both sides.  Some of the locals operate little bars in thatched huts on the beach so you can swim and laze as thing take you.

Out with the snorkel again, best waters yet, especially out near the Northern headland. Lots of larger fish around, well large for me, biggest was about 3 feet.

Floating in over the rocks and coral I have a close encounter with a sea snake on the bottom, and I was only in 18" of water. Back-off gently..

Some of the local kids borrow my snorkel, as they only have only one between about four of them, they are off school today and having fun.

I’m ready for another go and when they find that I’m taking the dinghy out to the point they ask to come as well, which makes beaching the dinghy easier as they junp out and pull it in.  On the way back they point out a big lizard on a tree branch half way up the cliff.

Later it is ashore for the barbeque and copious amounts of punch.

After that the evening is a blur, and someone did comment later that they saw a different side of me that night.  I can only hope it was my good side!
