Oct 10 - Crab in the shell, crab soup, crab balls … what a feast

October 11, 2008

Rock Hall is a small 300+ year old village just across the Chesapeake from Annapolis, that is now all tarted up for tourists – little shops all nicely painted with lots of crafty things to buy. But we found, by chance, a "locals" fish shop/restarant. We feasted on crab prepared in a variety of ways: in the shell, soup and balls. The table setting consisted of a large piece of thick brown paper that covered the table, a big bin to deposit the shells, a wooden hammer, a short knife and, of course, a roll of paper towel. Some fellow diners explained how to open, then separate the edible from the sickable. This is definitely "get your fingers dirty" way to eat. We used a lot of paper towels. After the crabfest we walked over for ice cream at a very old "soda fountain" type store.

After dinner entertainment included buying groceries. Carrying them in our packsacks we walked back a half mile to the marina where we were "day members" (included in the $15 dingy storage fee). After a shower (we never miss the chance) we returned in the moonlight to our boat anchored nearby. An unusually quiet day.
