Bahamas Voyage
Sept 28 - Waiting in Waterford
September 28, 2008
Finally. We are coming to the end of the Erie canal and its gazillion locks. The locks have been a piece of cake compared to the ones last year on the Well and canal. They are dark and slimy, but no diesel fuel. We stand with poles to push the boat away from the wall. At night we tie up to the docks by the locks, so we can head out bright and early the next morning. We have been extremely lucky with the weather until yesterday, when the clear warm days changed to a steady downpour the whole day.
Getting access to wifi has been difficult so communication has been a problem. Hopefully when the mast is up and our antenna works we will be able to communicate better.
We have met some fellow boaters along the way. It is always fun to share stories with others doing the same thing. We had a fun night on Rose and Claus boat with folks from two other boats. Rose and Claus have been doing this trip for 12years. Later we met another couple in their boat after it became disabled and we towed them for three hours.
Rose and Claus have been doing this every year for 12 years and there is no stopping! Claus told us it will take a few more weeks before we all mellow out. We look forward to this.
Life onboard is quite cozy. We live in a shoebox for now, as the sails take a lot of place because the mast is down. But after the sorting out that will take place soon, space will emerge.
We just now arrived in Waterford, tied to a dock, lots of boats around. We are ready to check out the town. We will be here for 2-3 days chilling out and waiting for a time when a marina in Catskill can raise our mast.
So long for now.
