On The Way!

July 04, 2008

We are on the way to Tortola. Johni and I left San Antonio at 7:30am on July 4th. We had a layover in Houston and meet up with John and Nancy for the next leg of the trip to Puerto Rico and then switch airlines to Tortola. The trip to Puerto Rico was right at 4 hours and was smooth. Nancy napped most of the way while John, Johni and I chatted off and on. After landing in Puerto Rico we saw iguanas sunning themselves just off the taxiways. The flight from Puerto Rico to Tortola was on Cape Air and was an 8 seat Cessna 402 twin engine aircraft. Our pilot was a young woman and she did a great job of acting as a tour guide too as she explained our route and identified which islands we would be passing over. Keep in mind, she didn’t need an intercom system to do this. She just turned around and spoke to us in the same way your parents would turn around and scold you in the car when you were on a trip.

The flight was glass smooth and as the sun set behind us it did a great job of lighting up the islands as we came in for a landing. Immigration and customs was quick and easy and we were soon in a cab.

The cab ride was interesting to say the least. About 30 mins of unpaved roads with lots of elevation changes and a bus with an engine that was barely up to the task. When we finally arrived at the marina he wasted no time offloading our bags and heading back to town. We caught up with Dave, Renee, Barry and Kathy who were already aboard Martha R and had just finished putting away all of the groceries for the trip.

After a quick introduction and tour the ladies wandered off to see what was nearby to eat. About 6 mins later Johni walked back and said the had run into the Commodore of the BVI Yacth Club and she had graciously invited us to dine with them. We all walked over and had a fantastic meal with them and visited until around 10:30pm.

Being spent from the trip here, we all retired for a good nights sleep aboard Martha R in the slip.
