Waiting to go through the Welland Canal

August 07, 2008

Today is Thursday August 7 and we are in Port Colborne waiting for the weather to clear so that we can go through the Welland Canal.  Dave’s Daughter, Tammy and her husband Paul and daughter Olivia came up and are staying with us on the boat.  We hope that we can go through the canal tomorrow but it might not happen if the weather doesn’t cooperate.

Today we went to Niagara Falls and rode the Maid of the Mist up to the Falls.  Everyone wore raincoats and got all wet.  It was a great experience and we met some people who got married 50 years ago and are coming back to celebrate their first anniversary 50 years later!

This is a great vacation spot and thousands of tourists are here.  They have lots of things to do for the kids and adults too.  Hope someone can come up this way next year when we come through the canal on the return trip so we can share it with them.

Once we get through the canal, we will travel on Lake Ontario to Oswego, NY and take the mast down.  That is the main reason Paul and Tammy came up to bring the mast stands so we can carry the mast down the Erie Canal.

Hasta for now.

Hi Uncle Chuck! I am excited to read about your journey and hope we can meet up when you are going thru the Hudson River in NY. The marina where George keeps his sailboat is Haverstraw – it is south of Newburgh, but he lives very near to Newburgh in Fishkill, so will hopefully meet you when you get close to there. Have a great time!
