We move over to Haverstraw Marina

August 26, 2008

After spending the night anchored in Half Moon Bay, we pulled up the muddy anchor with a crab attached to the rope and motored over to the Haverstraw Marina.  We liked this area and spent some time here.  There is a lot of history here and there are some interesting facts about this spot.

In 1609 Henry Hudson, an Englishman employed by the Dutch East India Company, sailed his ship, the Half Moon, up the river that would bear his name in a vain search for the legendary Northwest passage. He sailed as far as what is now Albany and on the return trip the Half Moon anchored in what is now Haverstraw Bay, the widest point in the river. The ship had scarcely anchored when "the people of the mountains" flocked aboard. Most were friendly but one was shot and killed by a sailor for stealing some items from the ship. This incident created difficulties for future settlers but Hudson’s journey claimed the whole hudson Valley for the Dutch.    To read more about the history of Haverstraw go here and also look at the old pictures.

It was really nice that here in Haverstraw we met up with my niece, Kim and her friend George.  They are sailors as well and we had a great time on the water and cooking out on the point just as the sun was drifting into the western sky for the night.  That was one of the best meals I have had in a long time!  Thanks Kim and George!
