Arrival in Sweden!
June 06, 2008
This is a park disguised as a country. So beautiful!!As a third generation Scandinavian American colonist returning to the old country its easy to see how differently the mature society that has already gone through its youthful excesses keeps itself in careful pristine condition. Here along the Southwest Coast the herring fishery demanded deforestation beyond the point of sustainability. Every last tree was taken, the soil washed away and now the coast is dominated by rocks with the forest slowly returning over one or two hundred years. Having learned that lesson the society now carefully controls and limits development and resource use. The result, a beautiful and ecologically functional landscape of small farms and towns set in a blanket of forests. Sweden is gourgeous and an inspiration.
