Cool Breeze does the Chesapeake
Saint Michael's
June 07, 2008
Even though our slip was in a hard-to-exit place, Bill did an admirable job (no pun intended) of getting out and back in to the harbour. After a little confusion, we made it back into the Bay and motored past the Thomas Point Lighthouse. The day was gray and chilly, though sunny skies and warm temps were predicted for the afternoon. What little wind we had was pretty much on our nose, so we motored across to the Eastern Shore into Eastern Bay and then to the East Wye River and anchored in Shaw Bay. Although we had been cold travelling, the afternoon was as predicted, warm and sunny. By evening, we’d been joined by four or five other sailboats, but there was plenty of room. It was a lovely anchorage and we had a nice spaghetti dinner and a quiet night’s sleep. We woke to dense fog in the Bay. Since we didn’t have far to go to St. Michael’s, we had the leisure to wait out the fog. By 11:00 the fog had lifted considerably, though there was still not great visibility. On our trip into St. Michael’s we encountered perhaps the largest number of rude power boats we have ever seen. The passage into St. Michael’s was not too wide, and these boats would come barreling by without slowing one bit. We have never been waked so many times by such huge waves as we were today. Regardless, we did make it into the marina safely. Remember my prediction about the Canadians and the summer weather? Well, today the temperature is a blazing 95 with nary a breeze in the marina. Thank goodness for our air conditioner. We toured the Maritime Museum this afternoon, which consisted of multiple buildings with interesting exhibits. My favorite was the Hooper Point Lighthouse that had been brought to St. Michael’s. The lighthouse is furnished just as it would have been when it was populated by the lighthouse keeper and wife/and or assistant. I can’t imagine spending a month at a time in the lighthouse with the only contact being a supply steamer once a month.
Sorry for the delay in the blog, but we’ve been busy or have had little cell phone service, so this is a long one. We plan to be here through tomorrow, our 40th anniversary, and then once again we’ll head south. It might take me a day or two to get the pictures loaded, but I’ll try and get this on before we head out for dinner.
