Parry's Sail To the Baltic

Samso Island To Ebeltoft Bay

May 20, 2008

Left Samso island at 2pm after Hollie and Steve had a few hours on the beach and I did a spot of work.

Sailed all the way to Ebeltoft Vig (bay) 20 miles on a beam reach.  Then anchored in the bay.  This area is part of the Djurslands Peninsula which is stunning and much more like the Denamrk we were expecting.  We anchored near the Mols Bjerge with its rolling hills and lovely stretches of beach. Had a quite night at anchor.

The next morning we took the boat into Ebeltoft marina and then took the bikes out to explore the town.  Ebeltoft is a really quaint place with cobbled streets and half timber framed buildings…much more like it again! Had lunch in a cafe overlooking a cute square..in the sun again! and Hollie found a Danish friend to play chase with. In the afternoon we went to see the Frigate Jylland which was Denmarks last wooden boat to be built in 1856-1860. It was originally a war ship before becoming King Christian IX’s royal ship for a while. It was also a training boat as well as a home for children for a while before being saved and restored in the 1980’s. The hull was very impressive with its copper bottom but we decided that The Victory was much better even though it was much older, a better class of British Boat!

The cultural visit to Ebeltoft continued by a visit to The Glass Museum which was more like an art gallery than a museum but excellent all the same. The exhibition by Graduate students from Italy was fantastic.  They had been given a project to interview people living an old peoples home and then capture some of their memories in glass (glass being something that remains around!) My favourite was a piece which was an old suitcase (the mans original case) which he used when he was a travelling salesman and the student had made glass shirts and put them inside it, really great! Outside there was an exhibition of glass sculptures in pale blue partially filled with water which shone in the sun, very cool!

Wandered back to the boat and I then went off for provisions with my bike and trolley. Had chicken curry for tea followed by an episode of HW.
