Parry's Sail To the Baltic
Gouda to Alphen A/D Rijn
April 19, 2008
Spent a morning in Gouda after the Girls (Hollie included) went off for a bike ride. Looked around the longest church in Holland (Church of John the Babtist) which had over 60 huge stained glass windows. A visit to the Cheese museum (WAAG – where they weighed the cheese) followed by he purchase of some excellent Gouda in the local market.
Mid-afternoon we decided to make a run for it as the bridges and lock into the town are closed on Sundays and there isa large railway bridge that only opens a few times a day on the outskirts. We beat the bridge and followed some Dutch guys who seemed to know what they were doing. We made it for quite a few miles with two more bridges to clear Alphen but ran out of tie as the bridges shut at 6. Trapped between two bridges a kind Dutch guy on a hotel boat moored on the bank said we could tie up to him so together with Suzie Too rafted next to to us. We went to explore the bars ad on the recommendation of the Dutch guy found a bar that had a live blues band on later. After a quiet drink in bar next door David and Suzanne called it a day and team Parry went for some low down dirty blues. Not a bad band and a good end to a day.
