Tregoning
About Me
I am Alison Stocker and with my husband, Randall, we have just started cruising in our sailboat. We retired from working at the University of Florida at the end of December 2007 and cast-off from Florida on June 1st, 2008, on our shake-down cruise up the eastern coast of North America.
We bought our boat knowing that she needed plenty of re-fitting and that process is continuing as we cruise. Our blog is primarily intended for our friends and relations who want to find out where we are, but we welcome review and comments from anyone friendly!
Tregoning is a Cornish family name (meaning “homestead of Cohnan” or “farm by the ash trees”) and was my mother’s middle name.
Sailing Experience
I grew up in Cornwall, Great Britain, and was exposed to sailing in my youth. My older brothers probably took it more seriously than me then, but my career (in aquatic plant research) has never taken me far from the water and boats. So it was good to get a 21 ft sailboat about 10 years ago and get back into sailing.
Randall is a surfer from California and bought his first 23 ft sailboat in the early 1990’s. He had also spent a career on the water in airboats and small motor boats. In 2006, we sold our 26 ft Hunter (which was towed across the US three times) and bought our current 41 ft Morgan Classic.

Thank you very much for your comments, Gordstpaul. Good luck with your boat search. It is very interesting that you live near New Mills. Randall notes that there are many McMillans around the area and he does not have any records of exact family history connections there. Most of the orginal family moved from NB to Central California. However, although we are not going to be able to sail there, we are planning to rent a car in Halifax later this week and drive up to visit New Mills. We are leaving Louisbourg on Cape Breton today and hope to get to Halifax sometime on Monday. We have enjoyed your comments. Best wishes, Alison

hello from Crawfordville!
As boaters who dream of retirement and the single-minded purposeful pursuit of existence from a boater’s perspective, I salute you. I eagerly await the next installment, as we will learn first-hand about the tenacity and inventiveness required for a journey like yours. Great job, and be aware that you are an insiration to those of us who think we might like to do this but are not quite sure we have the “intestinal fortitude”. Prove it to me. Have a great time, and remind us all of what it mean to truly live the dream. Best Wishes, and thanks for keeping us in touch. Donna

Hi Alison and Randall! What a great idea, a facebook for itinerants like yourselves!
I look forward to keeping up with your adventures here. The next thing you should sign up for (probably have already) is skype. Free telephoning – to and from anywhere – for nothing.
Anyway – hope all is well on the water – you must finally be feeling familiar with everything and one (or two..) with the boat. Like Kevin Costner in Waterworld….!
Thanks for the card! I did have fun …
ok – sail on – tok2u later!
